Marketing lessons from my 72 year old mother

Dear 10X Business Builder,

Old people are hilarious. My mom, bless her heart, is no exception.

The things they say and the way they think is different than our generation.

It’s always been like that and I imagine, it will always be this way.  Technically, I believe it’s what the gooroos call a  “generation gap”.

The other day my mom randomly, outta thin air said, “I think those Geico commercials are stoooopid!”

Of course, I had no clue what she was talking about until I was watching ESPN for old people (the halmark movie channel) and one of those bad boys came on.

And she’s right, it was outrageous and it was ridiculous.

But, ‘there’s gold in dem ‘mercials’…

Let Sterdog (my childhood nickname is Sterling) explain:

First of all my mother is not what I’d call hip.  She isn’t up to date on pop culture.  She’s a 72 year old grandma, that likes to sew, knit and watch Chicago Fire.

If I asked her to name ANY movie out in the last 5 years….

Any new band, DJ etc in the last 10 years…

Who won the last super bowl…

… she wouldn’t have a clue.

But if I asked her to name a car insurance company, you guessed it, she would name Geico.

You see there is something to be said about being different and standing out.

Top of mind awareness is a concept that gets very little discussion, yet, is almost always a factor when someone goes to purchase a product or service.

If your name can come to mind when a prospect or patient is looking for a solution to a problem, you are already light years ahead of your competition.

One way to be different is by speaking in public or video marketing.

Why?

Because statistically speaking around 95% of the population have some form of fear of public speaking or camera shyness.

That means, just by doing either, you are automatically DIFFERENT than 95% of people.

Not to mention, the authority positioning that you get from being a speaker.
